"The Militarization of the Social in New Orleans:
A Field Trip to Jackson Barracks and Holy Cross
"

Saturday, November 20
2:00-5:00 p.m.
Assembling in the Marriott Preservation Hall Foyer at 1:45 p.m.

SCA Organizer: Danilyn Rutherford (UC Santa Cruz)

The Society for Cultural Anthropology's signature event at the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association, “Culture@ Large” features four anthropologists in conversation with an interlocutor from outside the discipline. In a new initiative, SCA leaves the Sheraton for a field trip on that will offer insights into the theme of this year’s session, which features David Theo Goldberg speaking on the militarization of the social.

Widely known for her work on questions of power, difference, and materiality in New Orleans, past and present, archeologist Shannon Lee Dawdy joins the Culture@Large panelists for a tour of two sites: Jackson Barracks, which lies on the boundary of the Ninth Ward and St. Bernard Parish, and Holy Cross, a historic neighborhood directly adjacent to the river. At Jackson Barracks, Colonel Tommy Ryan will speak on the National Guard's role during Hurricane Katrina and in New Orlean's reconstruction. In Holy Cross, which is a more diverse neighborhood than the heavily publicized Lower Ninth Ward, we will gain another perspective on the militarization of the social. Abraham Santa Cruz, an anthropology student with family ties to the community, will join local residents in relating how this aspect of life in New Orleans shaped their experience during Hurricane Katrina, as well as their struggles in the storm’s wake.

We will be asking those who sign up for the field trip for donations of $20 (from professionals) and $10 (from students) to benefit our hosts. Online registration is now closed, but there are a few spaces left on the bus. You can add your name to a waiting list by emailing druther1@ucsc.edu.
